Reid laughs at idea that GOP will block more post-nuclear option

"You'll be sorry, now" is the mantra from Senate Republicans after Democrats voted to go nuclear on the filibuster. And of course The Village punditry point at those words and tsk-tsked Very Seriously about how there will never be bipartisanship again. To which Majority Leader Harry Reid responds with a laugh.

"We had to take action, drastic action, to respond to the American people looking at Congress as they do," he said in an interview with WAMU's "The Diane Rehm Show."

When Rehm asked if the filibuster change would make "bipartisanship" and "comity" in the Senate even more difficult, the Democratic leader laughed out loud.

"I'm sorry to—smile—as you can't see on radio," he said. "More disfunction? I mean, gee whiz. When you have constitutionally necessary posts like judges who they refuse to put in office?"

If you've been paying attention and don't live in The Village, you know that Republicans care as much about bipartisanship and comity as they do poor people. Less, if that's even remotely possible. What really matters right now, though, is that Senate Democrats have finally stopped listening to the Very Serious people on the filibuster, and have moved on. That's clear in what Reid said about the three Democrats—Sens. Carl Levin (MI), Joe Manchin (WV) and Mark Pryor (AR)—who voted against going nuclear. "But frankly, if I needed a couple of those, I could've gotten those too," he said. Levin is likely the only Democrat who remains opposed.

Which means that when Reid needs to pull the trigger on the legislative filbuster (and it is when, not if) he'll have the votes to do it.
